Discovering Names That Match Your Style
How BabyTime's recommendation engine learns your preferences and surfaces perfect matches
How Name Discovery Works
BabyTime's Discovery feed is your personalized name stream. Unlike browsing alphabetical lists or random "baby name" websites, Discovery actively learns from every vote to show you names you're more likely to love.
The Learning Algorithm
After just 15-20 votes, BabyTime begins understanding your style by analyzing:
- Origins & Etymology: Cultural backgrounds (Irish, Hebrew, Greek, etc.)
- Sound Patterns: Ending sounds (-a, -en, -ia), starting letters, vowel placement
- Syllable Structure: Short (1-2 syllables) vs longer melodic names
- Popularity Tier: Top 10, Top 100, Unique (outside top 1000), Ultra-rare
- Name Meanings: Nature, virtues, strength, beauty, etc.
- Style Era: Classic, Modern, Vintage comeback, Trendy, Timeless
- Character Feel: Soft/gentle vs Strong/bold, Traditional vs Creative

Discovery Strategies
For First-Time Parents
- Start broad: Vote on 30-50 names without filters to teach BabyTime
- Identify patterns: After 30 votes, review what you loved
- Refine with filters: Now apply filters based on patterns you noticed
- Explore similar: Find names related to your top loves
- Narrow to shortlist: Add 15-20 favorites for deeper research
For Parents with Older Kids
- Use Sibling Harmony: Enter your other children's names
- Style consistency: BabyTime shows names that "go" together
- Avoid sound conflicts: Filter out names too similar to siblings
- Check initials: Make sure new name doesn't create awkward monograms
For Couples with Different Tastes
- Browse separately first: Each vote independently for 2-3 days
- Check Shared Loves: See where your tastes overlap
- Use Bridge Names: BabyTime suggests compromise options
- Try partner's style: Occasionally vote on names your partner loves to understand their perspective
Pro Tips for Better Recommendations
Maximizing Discovery Quality
- Vote on at least 50 names before judging recommendations
- Use "Maybe" sparingly - clear Yes/No helps the algorithm more
- Don't skip too many in a row (it limits learning)
- Vote across different name origins to find unexpected favorites
- Review your voting history monthly - your taste will evolve
- Try browsing at different times of day - mood affects preferences!
- Read full name details before shortlisting (avoid just vibes)
- Use Tournament Mode when overwhelmed with too many Loves
Understanding Your Results
Why am I seeing this name?
Pro users can tap any name in Discovery to see "Why this name?" which explains:
- Which of your Loved names it's similar to
- What patterns it matches (origin, sound, meaning)
- If your partner would likely love it (prediction)
Resetting Discovery
If recommendations feel off-track, you can reset the algorithm in Settings. You'll keep your votes and shortlist, but Discovery will start fresh. Useful if your taste changes dramatically mid-pregnancy!
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I keep seeing names I don't like?
Vote on more names! The algorithm needs data. After 15-20 clear votes, quality improves dramatically. Also check that you haven't accidentally voted "Love" on names you meant to skip.
Can I see ALL names in the database?
Yes! Use the "Browse All Names" feature (Settings -> Discovery Options). You can sort alphabetically or by popularity. But Discovery's AI approach is usually more productive!
Does voting affect my partner's feed?
No. Each person's Discovery is independent. Your partner might see names you passed if those match THEIR voting patterns.
What if I run out of names?
BabyTime has 45,000+ names in the database. If Discovery slows down, try:
- Expanding your filters (try different origins)
- Using "Show me more like [Name]" for favorites
- Browsing categories you haven't explored
- Resetting your filters to widen the pool
